The Whiskey Room at The Modern Man will be celebrating it’s grand opening SAT MAY 5th from 10am-Midnight.  There will be a film crew present as The Modern Man is working on developing a few top secret projects for summer 2012.  The Whiskey Room will also be airing the Floyd Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto boxing match LIVE for this manly event.  The match will take place at 4PM PST.  NO COVER CHARGE!

The Whiskey Room is what you might call a boys fort for grown-ups.  Serving a variety of over 40 different whiskeys, bourbons and scotches, it’s a dream come true for today’s modern man.  Conveniently located on the 2nd floor of The Modern Man Barber Shop, you can come in for a high & tight and an Old Fashioned pairing or skip the primping altogether and just head right on up to the 2nd floor for a whiskey flight and a ploughman’s lunch. 

As featured on Thrillist.com, The Whiskey Room is adorned with taxidermy trophies, bear pelts, antique six shooters and a 10 foot projection screen for black and white silent films, Timbers’ games and pay-per-view events.  You won’t find any “Appletinis” here, the cocktails offered are traditional, simple and unpretentious.  Enjoy a classic Manhattan, Whiskey Sour, Old Fashioned or a Scotch and Soda, but if you come looking for an AMF or a Tokyo Tea you just might find yourself at the wrong end of the bartender’s mustache if you know what we mean!  Oh and don’t forget to try an import from the generous selection of cigars from the humidor!

The Whiskey Room is also available for private parties of 12 or more.  NO DEPOSIT REQUIRED to reserve the space for an evening at this point and time.  The space is small and cozy, warm and inviting.  Ladies and gentlemen are always welcome.  Troublemakers need not enter and will be escorted out promptly.  The Whiskey Room is a safe environment for everyone!

I’d like to take a moment to explain how we book Groupon appointments here at The Modern Man.  There seems to be some confusion and we’d like a chance to explain the process so you can enjoy your Groupon experience thoroughly.

Here at The Modern Man, we book appointments in half hour increments.  If you need a haircut, we book you for 30 minutes.  If you need a shave, we book you for 30 minutes.  On any given day, chances are if you need ONE of those services, we probably have a 30 minute slot available somewhere on the schedule.  As a matter of fact, we may even have several 30 minutes openings spread out throughout the day. 

If you’d like a haircut AND a shave your chances get slimmer if you’re hoping to book a same day appointment as we now need to find 60 available minutes (that’s 2 consecutive openings).  It’s possible, but it’s highly advisable to book your appointment in advance.

Now, a Groupon service is an all inclusive service that can take upwards of 90 minutes.  So that means we have to find 3 consecutive slots available, right next to each other, back to back.  We are a VERY busy barber shop and to find 3 consecutive availabilities on short notice is borderline impossible at this point.  As I type these words, the current wait for a Groupon service (again - meaning as I look at our schedule, the first day that I can find 3 openings available back to back) is 10 days.  We’re not being “clever”, we don’t have a secret scam to let your Groupon expire, we’re just an extremely busy shop.  Think of it like a busy restaurant that runs a Groupon promotion, thus becoming an EXTREMELY busy restaurant.  If you then call the restaurant that day to make a reservation and they’re all booked up, it doesn’t really make sense to get upset with the restaurant.  You just might need to plan your night out a little further in advance.

As you can imagine, due to selling nearly 1,000 Groupons, our business has grown exponentially in the past few months.  We ask that you please be understanding as we try and accommodate as many of you as we possibly can!  That being said, if you’d like to book a Groupon service on a specific day at a specific time (and for all of you that would like to come in as a group), all you have to do is just plan ahead and book your appointment in advance.  That’s it!  We should have no problem booking your desired time as long as you just give us a little bit of notice and plan ahead :)

ALSO, in order to accommodate more of you each day, we’ve ordered a 4th chair that is shipping from Nashville, TN today!  Hopefully it will be here by the beginning of next week.  Thanks to all of those who have been patient and understanding about our busy schedule and for those of you who may have been a little upset, I hope this helps to explain the process a little better!

Well gentleman, it’s all happening…

The second floor of The Modern Man will soon be “The Whiskey Room at The Modern Man”!  Full bar, pool, darts, poker, sports, pay-per-view events, wifi, you name it!  Renovations have begun, just jumping through hoops and red tape at the moment, but before you know it, we’ll be pouring to your hearts content!

Once again The Modern Man will be offering shoe shines starting Saturday February 4th!  You can book your appointment online or just come on in.  Wade Price is a professional in the field and has been helping to keep Portland’s shoes look dapper for years.  Just $6 to make them shine like mirrors!

I was very please with my experience at the Modern Man. I arrived early and was greeted with a glass of Maker’s Mark neat. While I enjoyed my libation I perused some of the man friendly reading material. My barber, Ryan, was polite and friendly and provided a top notch haircut and neck shave. Frank Sinatra and Johnny Cash were playing throughout. After jumping around from barber to barber, I’ve finally found a place to call my own. I look forward to going back for my next cut!

What a treat, and within walking distance of our home/office! If you grew up in the 1960s or 70s, or even if you didn’t, there’s a casual, classy, deja-vue kind of ambience here that you just don’t find in most hair shops these days. My barber was Dave, a great conversationalist who knows his craft. And they offered me a shot of bourbon or a beer, nice touch. I don’t smoke cigars, but that was offered as well on my way out. I will definitely be back!
